Job description

Job purpose

The Programme Officer will support the work undertaken by ClientEarth’s programme of work on Brexit and International Trade. They will work closely across the programme to provide assistance in project management and planning, monitoring and evaluation work, communications, and reporting to funders. 

They will also provide legal and policy research capacity to support the work of ClientEarth and be involved in researching and writing internal briefs as well as contributing to briefings for external audiences on various legal and constitutional issues arising from the UK exit process from the European Union (EU) as well as on related policy and legal issues across our programme areas (wildlife, fisheries, climate and energy, air pollution, chemicals, etc). 

Working relationships

The position reports to the UK Environment Lead and works closely with colleagues in the communications, admin, development and public affairs teams. 

Key responsibilities

Programme Administration

• Assisting the team to develop and implement organisational systems and tools, such as project planning/strategy and monitoring and evaluation processes;

• Facilitating use of document and case management systems;

• Assisting with creation of public-facing content, including editing, formatting and proof-reading;

• Compiling documents for distribution to senior management, external partners, the board or funders;

• Organising and coordinating logistics for workshops, meetings, and other events (including organising seminars or similar events); 

• Processing purchase requests, travel requests, expenses and invoices from contractors;

• Supporting the budget holder in tracking and monitoring expenditure against project budgets; 

• Drafting press releases and other relevant content, including on social media, for communications and raising public awareness; 

• Administering contracts with partners and third parties;

• Scheduling and administering internal and external meetings;

• Liaising between the Programme and the core Administration, Finance, Development and Communications teams, for example in relation to office systems, social media and reporting to funders;

• Providing general support and guidance to staff and external audiences by providing prompt and useful responses to general queries regarding the Programme.

Research

• Conducting research and preparing internal memos or databases on various topics required for the team’s work;

• Supporting the development of legal briefings, reports, notes and position papers on relevant legal issues;

• Providing quick-turnaround political and policy research on UK environment related issues;

• Monitoring events at EU, international and national levels which are relevant to the work of the team.

Location

This post is based in London. Travel to other locations where ClientEarth has an office or elsewhere in Europe may be occasionally needed in the role.

Person Specification

Education & training

• Educated to at least degree level (essential)

• Degree or equivalent in politics, law or environmental policy (desirable)

Experience & knowledge

• Understanding of environmental and/or public law/policy (essential)

• Experience responding to competing deadlines and managing multiple priorities (essential)

• Knowledge of administrative processes and procedures (essential)

• Understanding of UK decision-making processes (desirable)

• Understanding of the political landscape in the UK and EU (desirable) 

• An interest in environmental and constitutional issues (desirable) 

• Experience working in a not-for-profit organisation and/or legal environment (desirable)

Key competencies
