Sustainability Officer

Salary: The starting salary will be £30,993 with potential for future progression as well as eligibility of annual cost of living rises. The maximum salary for this role is currently £37,817.

Crown Estate Scotland has an exciting opportunity for a Sustainability Officer to join our team on a full-time permanent basis. This new role in our policy team will contribute to a diverse range of projects and workstreams including our Sustainable Communities Fund, marine natural capital initiatives, marine planning, biodiversity & climate change reporting and our new Children and Young People’s Forum.

About the role

The successful candidate for this new role will work on an exciting range of projects and activities including:

• Our Sustainable Communities Fund;
• Biodiversity and climate change reporting;
• Marine natural capital;
• Marine planning;
• Our asset profiles;
• Delivery of our Climate Change Action Plan;
• Environmental research;
• Reviewing emerging government policy and developing consultation responses;
• Strategic Environmental Assessment, Islands Communities Impact Assessment, and Equalities Impact Assessment;
• Stakeholder research;
• Helping coordinate implementation of our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion plan; and
• Our new Children and Young People’s Forum.

Knowledge and experience in all of these areas is not a requirement as you will be guided and supported by colleagues as needed. 

The contractual working location of this role is our Edinburgh office. However, we believe work is something you do, not a place you go to, and we are committed to supporting employees to work flexibly and in a way that suits their own role and preferences. There will be a requirement to travel for occasional off-site meetings and opportunities to visit different parts of the Estate (e.g. rural areas, coastal locations etc). 

The starting salary will be £30,993 with potential for future progression as well as eligibility of annual cost of living rises. The maximum salary for this role is currently £37,817. The role also benefits from 25 days’ annual leave, increasing to 30 days after four years’ service, plus 11.5 of public / privilege days. Crown Estate Scotland encourage flexible working and operate a discretionary flexi-time scheme. This role offers participation in the Civil Service pension scheme. Contribution levels for the scheme are currently 5.45% employee contribution at the entry salary for this role whilst Crown Estate Scotland contribution levels are 27.1%.

About You

Candidates for this role should:

• Hold a qualification in a relevant subject (e.g. geography, sustainable development, resource management, marine and/or terrestrial planning).
• Have knowledge of sustainable development in relation to land, property and / or marine assets.
• Understand the fundamentals of good project management.
• Have excellent written communication skills with the ability to clearly and succinctly summarise complex documents, prepare briefings, presentations etc.
• Be able to review, edit and critique reports that contain qualitative and quantitative information.
• Be able to build and maintain relationships - and to engage effectively with internal and external contacts.

You will have the following qualities, which are key to success in this role:

• Be proactive and adopt an inquisitive approach to work.
• Willingness to learn and develop your knowledge and skills.
• Confidence in using Microsoft Office products (such as Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Sharepoint, MS Teams).
