Job Summary

A unique opportunity has arisen to help shape and deliver VolkerRail’s social value policies, strategies and programmes to achieve our Strategic Goal to be a ‘socially and environmentally responsible business’. The role is in VolkerRail’s Corporate HSQES Function based in Doncaster, and will work collaboratively with colleagues across all functions, operational delivery teams, and with our parent company VolkerWessels UK.

Reporting to the Head of Environment & Sustainability, role specific responsibilities include:

- Engaging with stakeholders to understand the local social needs, opportunities and risks for VolkerRail’s corporate activities and within our contract delivery catchments.
- Developing social value plans and using Social Return on Investment practises to measure and maximise the impact of our activities.
- Developing and implementing a ‘Young Talent Programme’ to attract new entrants into entry level roles; focussing on identified skills shortages and broader societal needs for social mobility, equality, diversity and inclusion within the workplace.
- Engaging and supporting VolkerRail’s STEM Ambassadors to fulfil the objectives of the ‘Young Talent Programme’.
- Administering VolkerRail’s internal volunteering portal.
- Providing environment and community volunteering opportunities for Corporate staff and increasing levels of engagement across the Company in line with our Volunteering Policy.
- Coordinating the collection, input, reporting and verification of social value data through both internal and external systems.
- Internally and externally promote and communicate VolkerRail’s social value activities and performance.  

Job Requirements

The candidate will need the following qualities to deliver this role effectively:

• Passionate about driving organisations to deliver social benefits and improving their triple bottom line. 
• Self-motivated with a pro-active approach to engage across all disciplines, levels of management and key supply chain partners with energy and enthusiasm. 
• A high level of integrity to build strong, collaborative relationships internally and with external stakeholders.
• Participate actively with ideas and opinions in meetings and forums, sharing best practice and seeking to continuously advance social performance within VolkerRail, VWUK and across the construction and rail sectors.

The candidate will have a degree in Sustainability, Corporate Responsibility or a related discipline; or have already transitioned into a social value role from a career within another discipline. 

They will also have the following experience:

- 5-years experience in a Corporate Responsibility or Sustainability role, ideally developing and delivering social value activities within construction or rail sectors.
- Fellow of the Institute of Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability or Social Value International Practitioner, or willing to work towards it.
- Knowledgeable about social value including the UK Government Social Value Model.
- Managing local partnerships with educational establishments and community groups.
- An active STEM Ambassador or have experience in delivering STEM engagement events with young people.
- Administering Social Value Reporting Systems, and knowledge and/or experience of Social Return on Investment.
- Creating compelling communication deliverables and engagement programmes. 

The candidate must be capable of holding an Enhanced DBS Certificate to fulfil this role.
