Public Practice was founded as a not-for-profit in October 2017 with a mission to build the public sector’s capability to improve the quality, equality and sustainability of places. The organisation delivers services to help the public sector build capacity and develop its placemaking capabilities. They work across three core areas to achieve their mission:

Recruit people: Public Practice builds capacity by attracting and recruiting new talent into the public sector. It runs the Associate Programme, a leading job placement scheme that recruits mid-career built environment professionals into placemaking roles in the public sector, and curates a jobs board that advertises UK-wide roles for more senior professionals.

Improve processes: Public Practice builds capability by improving ways of working in public sector teams. The organisation undertakes workforce challenge research and publicly publishes an annual Insights Report, while offering training and consultancy to help build a strong culture to create effective, multidisciplinary teams.

Enable better places: Public Practice enables better places by building public sector capacity and capability. The organisation facilitates cross-sector shared learning and promotes best practice by celebrating and sharing the innovative work of public sector officers through regular events, impact case studies and an annual placemakers magazine, ‘Public Notice’.
