About The Sector

Renewable energy comes from natural resources such as geothermal heat, rain, sunlight, tides, waves, wind and which can be naturally replenished. It is envisaged that there will be significant growth in the sector over the coming years as countries embrace low carbon economies due to climate change concerns, high oil/gas prices, peak oil, government legislation and the need for energy security. Indeed research by the Renewable Energy Association (REA) and consultants Innovas reveals that the UK's £12.5 billion renewables industry supports 110,000 jobs across the supply chain, and could support 400,000 jobs by 2020. This growth in the industry is been driven by government policy and the 2009 directive which has set a target for the United Kingdom to achieve 15% of its energy consumption from renewable sources by 2020 as compared to 3% in 2009. The requirement to achieve this target will be a major factor in increasing the number of people employed in this sector, though sceptics feel that achieving this target will be challenging. Within Europe over 1 million people are employed in the sector with the European Commission believing that low-carbon generation and energy efficiency could generate as many as five million jobs across the EU by 2020.
